Indian Women's Hockey Team Unveiled For 5 Nations Tournament In Valencia 2023
Hockey India has officially announced the 22-member Indian Women’s Hockey Team that will participate in the upcoming 5 Nations Tournament in Valencia, Spain, scheduled from December 15th to 22nd, 2023. This tournament serves as a crucial preparatory event leading up to the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024, set to commence on January 13th, 2024.
The team, led by ace goalkeeper Savita as Captain and seasoned player Vandana Katariya as Vice-Captain, boasts a well-balanced composition. The goalkeeping duties will be shared by Savita and Bichu Devi Kharibam, while the defensive lineup features the return of Gurjit Kaur alongside Nikki Pradhan, Udita, Ishika Chaudhary, and Akshata Abaso Dhekale.
In the midfield, the team comprises Nisha, Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke, Monika, Salima Tete, Neha, Navneet Kaur, Sonika, Jyoti, and Baljeet Kaur. The forward line is set with Jyoti Chhatri, Sangita Kumari, Deepika, Vandana Katariya, Beauty Dungdung, and Sharmila Devi.
Commenting on the selection, Chief Coach Janneke Schopman expressed confidence in the team’s strength and balance. She emphasized that the tournament provides a crucial platform for players to build on recent performances and enter the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024 in prime form.
Schopman added, “The matches against the top European teams will also help us identify areas that need improvement ahead of the tournament, and we are looking forward to making the most out of the opportunity.”
