Indian cricket team found themselves fixated on a television set at Dublin’s The Village cricket ground. Their eyes were locked on the live broadcast of Chandrayaan 3’s triumphant soft landing on the Moon. This momentous event unfolded on Wednesday, August 23. Ahead of their 3rd and final T20I against Ireland, Jasprit Bumrah, his teammates, and the support staff of the Indian cricket team joined in jubilant celebration of the landing.
From different corners of the country, India’s all-format captain Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan also partook in the revelry. The cricket community was brimming with elation as this historic lunar landing marked a watershed moment. In a video shared by the Indian cricket board, the Indian players can be seen applauding the dedicated endeavours of the Indian Space Research Organisation, as Chandrayaan 3 gracefully touched down on the Moon’s southern pole.
In a remarkable feat, India attained the distinction of being the pioneer in achieving a lunar landing within the Moon’s enigmatic southern polar region. This achievement has thrust the country into a leading position in lunar exploration. Extending his congratulations, Rohit Sharma praised ISRO, affirming that this was a source of immense pride for every citizen of the nation. Former captain Virat Kohli also expressed his joy through a post on the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter.
With this milestone, India has solidified its place as the fourth nation globally to successfully carry out a rover landing on the Moon, following the United States, Russia, and China. This accomplishment is now etched in the annals of lunar exploration. Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), underscored the profound significance of this achievement, asserting that the historical instant would reverberate across generations.

Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the historic moon landing, acknowledging the diligent work of the scientists. He expressed, “No country has reached there (the South Pole of the moon) before. With the hard work of our scientists, we have reached there. Earlier, children used to say the Moon is far, but now they will say the Moon is just a tour.”
As the spacecraft touched down, scientists and officials broke into applause, cheers, and embraces. The government is now poised to stimulate investments in private space launches and satellite-based enterprises. “India is on the moon,” exclaimed S. Somanath, the head of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), as the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft landed on the lunar southern pole.
This event marked India’s second attempt at landing a spacecraft on the Moon, and it unfolded less than a week after Russia’s Luna-25 mission faced setbacks.
