In a thrilling Super Fours encounter of the Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, India defeated Pakistan by six wickets.
Tilak Varma finished the chase with a flick behind square for four off a full toss from Shaheen Afridi, marking India’s highest successful T20I chase against Pakistan since the 2022 World Cup match at the MCG.
This victory also represents India’s seventh consecutive win over Pakistan in completed matches across formats, reinforcing their dominance and boosting team morale ahead of the tournament’s later stages.
India chased Pakistan’s target of 172 with relative ease, finishing the match with seven balls to spare. Abhishek Sharma played a fiery innings, scoring 74 off 39 balls with six fours and five sixes.
His explosive knock effectively sealed the game, leaving the remainder of the chase as a formality for India’s formidable batting lineup.
Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan led the charge with a brilliant 34-ball fifty, helping Pakistan post a competitive total of 171/5 in 20 overs. He shared a 72-run partnership with Saim Ayub for the second wicket, putting India under early pressure.
After reaching his fifty, Farhan celebrated with a gunfire gesture using his bat, a move that quickly went viral on social media and drew widespread criticism.
In India-Pakistan matches, every on-field gesture attracts scrutiny. Many Indian fans saw the celebration as insensitive, linking it to past terrorist attacks like the Pahalgam attack that killed innocent tourists.
The gesture also appeared to reference India’s no-handshake policy during the previous Asia Cup encounter in Dubai.
While Farhan has performed similar celebrations in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) before, fans noted that his action on Sunday heightened tensions due to its perceived connection to the deaths of Indian soldiers and civilians.
India approached the target with a calculated and aggressive innings, led by key contributions from Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Tilak Varma.
The batting lineup maintained composure and steadily chased down the total, absorbing pressure during crucial phases.
India’s bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakaravarthy, applied pressure throughout Pakistan’s innings.
Bumrah delivered a disciplined spell, restricting the opposition’s big hitters and ensuring momentum shifted in India’s favour during the middle and death overs.
Meanwhile, the Indian Captain Suryakumar did not follow the customary gesture of shaking hands after the win. The captain refused to shake hands with the Pakistani Captain Salman Agha.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav praised the team’s performance under pressure and highlighted the importance of teamwork in high-stakes matches.
The victory strengthens India’s position in the Super Fours stage and sets a confident tone for the remaining matches of the Asia Cup 2025.
