Gukesh Dommaraju defeated Ding Liren in Game 14 of the World Chess Championship on Thursday, clinching the title. At just 18 years old, Gukesh became the youngest-ever world champion in chess history. He played as black while Liren played as white in this decisive match.
Liren’s Counterattack and Gukesh’s Resilience
Gukesh began strongly, but Liren responded with precision, putting pressure on Gukesh’s advancing bishop after a series of long pauses. In the 13th move, Gukesh retreated his bishop, putting his chances at risk. In the 17th move, Liren seized control, counter-attacking with his bishop and retreating his knight to safety, forcing Gukesh to rethink his strategy.
The game reached a critical point when Liren offered a Queen trade, which Gukesh accepted. This seemed to signal a move toward a draw and a tie-breaker. However, a blunder by Liren in the 55th move allowed Gukesh to capitalize. Moving his rook to f2, Liren made a mistake that Gukesh immediately exploited. With Liren’s defeat inevitable, he resigned, handing the title to Gukesh.
