I probably owe it to myself and my family—if I can score runs here and continue to play back in Australia, I can definitely say I won’t be playing that West Indies series.

Australia opener David Warner has dropped a retirement stunner only four days before the beginning of the eagerly awaited World Test Title last at The Oval against India. Warner made it clear on Saturday that he will end his long and successful Test career, with plans to say goodbye to the format at the end of the Australian summer.

David Warner announces an end date for his test career

Warner is currently in London getting ready for the WTC final on June 7 against the Indian team led by Rohit Sharma. After that, he will focus on the five-match Ashes series with England.
Warner told reporters in Beckenham that after Australia’s Test match against Pakistan in January at his home ground in Sydney, he wants to end his Test career. This means he won’t be able to play in the two-match Test series against the West Indies. He did, however, make it clear that he intends to continue playing white-ball cricket for Australia until the 2024 T20 World Cup, which will be held in the USA and West Indies.

What does David Warner have to say?

I probably owe it to myself and my family—if I can score runs here and continue to play back in Australia, I can definitely say I won’t be playing that West Indies series.
“If I can get through this (the WTC final and ensuing Ashes campaign) and make the Pakistan series, I will definitely finish up then.”

Warner prepares for a test in the UK

Warner, on the other hand, acknowledged that his place in the team is not certain as he prepares for the six-test tour of the UK. As a result, he feels the need to be consistent and perform much better than his numbers from the previous tour during Ashes 2019. When Stuart Broad’s lies bothered him, he had only averaged 10 at the time. The 36-year-old expects that his structure in the as of late finished IPL season changes in red-ball cricket.

“I want to play in that 2024 World Cup. It is something that is on my mind. We’ve got a lot of cricket before that, and then I think it stops in February,” said Warner.
“So for me, then I’ll have to play IPL and some of the other franchise leagues and then get into that rhythm to play in June.
