India’s Lovepreet Singh delivered a spirited performance to secure the silver medal in the men’s +110kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, falling just one kilogram short of the gold medal in a thrilling contest.
Lovepreet finished with a combined total of 388kg, while New Zealand’s David Liti clinched the gold with 389kg. England’s Andrew Griffiths took the bronze medal with an overall lift of 356kg.
The Indian heavyweight began strongly by successfully lifting 176kg in the snatch to remain firmly in contention for the title.
In the clean and jerk, Lovepreet Singh cleared 205kg and 212kg before making a courageous final attempt at 217kg to overtake Liti. Although he narrowly failed to complete the lift, his total of 388kg comfortably secured the silver medal.
Liti, who managed 166kg in the snatch, produced an outstanding 223kg lift in the clean and jerk to edge past Lovepreet by the slimmest of margins and retain the Commonwealth title.
Despite missing gold by just one kilogram, Lovepreet’s composed performance under pressure added another medal to India’s growing tally in Glasgow and reinforced the country’s strong reputation in Commonwealth weightlifting. His consistency and determination kept the contest alive until the very last lift.
Born on September 6, 1997, in Bal Sachandar village near Amritsar, Punjab, Lovepreet began weightlifting at the age of 13 after drawing inspiration from local lifters.
Despite financial challenges, Lovepreet rose through the ranks before joining the Sports Authority of India National Camp at NS NIS Patiala in 2017.
After moving from the 105kg to the 109kg category, Lovepreet Singh won bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.
