Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam won the bronze medal in the women’s 58kg weightlifting event on Monday, helping India secure its sixth medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal clinched the gold medal with a total lift of 229kg (103kg in snatch and 126kg in clean and jerk).

Canada’s Anne-Sophie Tashereau finished second with a combined 215kg (94kg in snatch and 121kg in clean and jerk).

Bindyarani secured third place with a total lift of 199kg, comprising 87kg in snatch and 112kg in clean and jerk.

Competing at the SEC Armadillo, Bindyarani produced a joint third-best performance in the snatch round by successfully lifting 83kg, 85kg, and 87kg across her three attempts.

England’s Eliza Pratt also lifted 87kg in the snatch, but Bindyarani was placed behind her on countback based on the order of successful attempts.

Rafiatu Folashade Lawal set both a Commonwealth Record and a Games Record in the snatch with a lift of 103kg, while Anne-Sophie Tashereau finished second with 94kg.

In the clean and jerk round, Lawal successfully lifted 117kg, 122kg, and 126kg, while Tashereau cleared 111kg, 115kg, and 121kg.

Bindyarani failed in her opening attempt at 110kg, but successfully lifted 112kg in her second attempt. She increased the weight by 4kg for her final attempt but was unsuccessful.

With Bindyarani’s bronze, India has now won six medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The campaign began with Jhandu Kumar’s bronze in para powerlifting, followed by Rishikant Singh’s silver in the men’s 60kg weightlifting event, Mirabai Chanu’s gold in the women’s 48kg category, Muthupandi Raja’s silver in the men’s 65kg division, and Gyaneshwari Yadav’s silver in the women’s 53kg event.
