Chennai Super Kings (CSK) posted a formidable 209/5 in 20 overs against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the seventh match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, riding on a fine knock from Ayush Mhatre and late contributions from the middle order.
CSK’s innings began on a shaky note with early wickets putting pressure on the batting unit. Sanju Samson was dismissed for 7 after edging an outswinger from Xavier Bartlett, continuing his struggles against lateral movement this season.
Amid the early trouble, Ayush Mhatre counterattacked confidently, showcasing strong preparation against short-pitched deliveries. His calculated strokeplay, including controlled pull shots and smart placement, allowed him to dominate the Power-play.
Mhatre raced to 29 off 19 balls and continued his aggressive approach, reaching 59 off 32 deliveries with a mix of boundaries and sixes.
While Mhatre held one end, Ruturaj Gaikwad found it difficult to accelerate, scoring 28 off 22 balls before a slow finish to his innings.
Mhatre’s dismissal for 73 proved to be a turning point, as he had contributed nearly 60 per cent of CSK’s runs at that stage, underlining his central role.
Following Mhatre’s departure, PBKS clawed back into the contest with regular wickets between the 12th and 14th overs, slowing CSK’s scoring rate.
Sarfaraz, Dube Provide Late Surge
Sarfaraz Khan injected momentum with a quickfire 32 off 12 balls, displaying innovative strokeplay against both pace and yorkers, particularly targeting Arshdeep Singh. His innings briefly lifted CSK before he lost his wicket in the 17th over.
Shivam Dube then took charge in the final overs, finishing unbeaten on 45 off 27 balls to propel CSK past the 200-run mark. The total marked CSK’s first 200-plus score at Chepauk since April 2024 against Sunrisers Hyderabad and their 15th such total at the venue.
For PBKS, Vyshak Vijaykumar picked up two wickets, while Yuzvendra Chahal, Xavier Bartlett, and Marco Jansen claimed one each.
