Officials said that Neymar, a Brazilian football star, had a major construction project at his residence in Rio de Janeiro state suspended on Thursday for environmental infractions, which might result in a $1 million fine.
In a statement, the mayor’s office said, “The project was being carried out without environmental authorization luxurious house owned by the player for Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil national team in Mangaratiba, around 130 kilometers (80 miles) from Rio de Janeiro”.
Following complaints made on social media, the authorities investigated and found various environmental infractions, including the diverting of a canal, and the illegal withdrawal of river water.
They also found that beach sand was being used without a permit, as well as unauthorized excavation and moving of dirt, stones, and rocks.
The mayor’s office stated, “The next step will be to make an assessment of the irregularities found and issue a fine which, according to estimates and in view of the environmental damage caused, will not be less than five million reais (about $1 million)”.
Representatives of Neymar in Brazil have not returned requests for comment.
In a video released by authorities and broadcast by local media, the footballer’s father, Neymar da Silva Santos, was present during the inspection and can be heard arguing with officials.
In 2016, the Brazilian Footballer purchased the property. It has a helipad, spa, and gym, and is situated on 10,000 square meters (2.5 acres) of property.
The right ankle surgery that the 31-year-old striker underwent in Doha, Qatar, in March is still healing.
Since he hasn’t played since February, there are questions about whether he will stay at PSG.
