Ben Stokes Rejoins England’s ODI Squad And Is Selected For The New Zealand Series In Order To Prepare For The World Cup

Ben Stokes, an all-rounder for England, has reversed his decision to retire from ODI cricket and has been drafted into the 15-man team for the series against New Zealand that begins later this month. Prior to the 2023 World Cup, the ECB made this choice in the hopes that Stokes, 32, would have ample opportunity to play in matches before England’s title defense at cricket’s largest spectacle, which will begin in India in October.

Ben Stokes is in for the ODI World Cup 2023

“Ben Stokes returns to the England Men’s ODI set-up after deciding to reverse his decision to retire from the format, while uncapped Surrey quick Gus Atkinson is included in the 15-player squad,” according to an ECB announcement.

A great performance in the Ashes 2023

Stokes, who played a key role in England’s title victory at the 2019 World Cup, announced the end of his ODI career, arguing it was impossible for him to give his all in all three formats. However, Stokes showed his willingness to reverse his decision in an effort to help England defend its World Cup title. Given Stokes’ recent knee injury, which caused him to miss a substantial portion of matches for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2023, the development is made all the more intriguing. Stokes is probably going to play the World Cup as a specialist batter, despite the fact that he looked much better during the Ashes.

The last ODI played by Ben Stokes

On July 19, 2022, Stokes made his last ODI appearance for England against South Africa. In 105 ODI games throughout the course of his career, he has amassed 2,924 runs at an amazing average of 38.98 and a phenomenal strike rate of above 95. His efforts in 90 innings include three centuries and 21 half-centuries. He has also proven his bowling ability by taking 74 wickets in this format, with his highlight effort producing a best statistic of 5/61.

ECB head selector’s remarks on Stokes’ return

Luke Wright, the ECB’s top selector, as well as the rest of the England team, are expected to be excited by Stokes’ comeback. Two incredibly good squads that highlight the amount of skill we have in white-ball cricket have been named by us. Ben Stokes’ ability to win games and leadership upon his return only strengthened such traits. Every fan will appreciate seeing him in an England ODI shirt once more, I’m sure of it,” he remarked.

“We’re also thrilled to offer Gus Atkinson and John Turner their maiden international calls, while Josh Tongue has earned a spot in the T20 team after shining during the Ashes. Any series against New Zealand will be fiercely contested, giving us a great chance to put our skills to the test against one of the top teams in the world.
