IPS officer Rashmi Shukla Takes Charge As Maharashtra DGP
Senior IPS officer Rashmi Shukla on Tuesday took charge as Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP), becoming the first woman top cop of the state. She took charge of the post from Mumbai police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar at the DG Office in south Mumbai. Phansalkar was holding the additional charge as DGP of Maharashtra after Rajnish Seth retired from the post on December 31, 2023. The state home department had issued the order for Shukla's appointment. The 59-year-old Indian Police Service officer of the 1988 batch was posted as director general of the Sashastra Seema Bal on deputation. Shukla was embroiled in controversy during the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government's tenure when she was named as an accused in phone tapping cases. The Bombay High Court in September 2023 quashed two FIRs registered against Shukla in this connection.

Ram temple consecration: All UP educational institutes to close on Jan 22, no sale of liquor
The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the state on January 22, the day of the consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Terming the occasion as a "national festival", Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that liquor shops in the state should be closed on that day. "Considering the significance of the consecration ceremony of the eagerly awaited new idol of Shri Ram Lalla in Ayodhya Dham, the CM has declared a holiday in educational institutions on January 22," an official release issued here said.
Fire breaks out in hardware store in Delhi
A fire broke out in a hardware store in northwest Delhi's Sultanpuri Majra area on Tuesday, officials said. Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials said three fire engines were pressed into service after they received a call about the fire around 2:15 pm. "The fire was put out within an hour. No one was injured in the incident," a DFS official said.

Gabriel Attal was named on Tuesday as France's youngest-ever prime minister, as President Emmanuel Macron seeks a fresh start for the rest of his term amid growing political pressure from the far right. Macron's office announced the appointment in a statement. Attal, 34, rose to prominence as the government spokesman and education minister. He is France's first openly gay prime minister. His predecessor Elisabeth Borne resigned Monday following recent political turmoil over an immigration law that strengthens the government's ability to deport foreigners. Macron, a 46-year-old centrist whose term ends in 2027, is to name a government in the coming days.
Centre approves repatriation of SSB chief Rashmi Shukla to Maharashtra
The Centre has approved repatriation of senior IPS officer Rashmi Shukla to her cadre state Maharashtra, where she has been appointed as the chief of the state's police force. Shukla, a 1988 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was posted as the Director General of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) here. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs for premature repatriation of Shukla to her parent cadre with immediate effect, said a Personnel Ministry order dated January 8. The Maharashtra government had last month issued an order appointing Shukla as the state's Director General of Police (DGP).
Tata Motors global wholesales up 9 pc in Q3
Tata Motors on Tuesday said its global wholesales, including that of Jaguar Land Rover, rose 9 per cent year-on-year to 3,38,177 units in the December quarter. Global wholesales of Tata Motors' commercial vehicles and Tata Daewoo range in October-December period of FY24 were at 98,679 units, up 1 per cent over third quarter of FY23, the company said in a regulatory filing. The company's global sales of all passenger vehicles, including electrical vehicles, were at 1,38,455 units, up 5 per cent year-on-year. Global wholesales for Jaguar Land Rover were 27 per cent higher at 1,01,043 units. Jaguar wholesales for the quarter stood at 12,149 vehicles, while Land Rover wholesales for the quarter were at 88,894 vehicles.
GE Power India gets Rs 10 crore order from NTPC
GE Power India Limited on Tuesday said it received an order worth Rs 10.3 crore from state-owned NTPC. The order is for supply of spares and repair of high power inner casing module, GE Power India said in a BSE filing. The order is to be completed in 10.5 months, the company said. GE is a leading player in engineering, manufacturing, project management and supply of products and solutions for power generation and transmission infrastructure requirements.
Drugs worth Rs 100 crore seized in Assam, 4 arrested
Drugs worth around Rs 100 crore were recovered from Karimganj district of Assam on Tuesday, and four peddlers have been arrested, police said. The contraband was recovered during a joint operation of the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police and Karimganj district police. "We got an input about the movement of the drugs from Mizoram and accordingly initiated an operation. As per information, we intercepted a car at Suprakandi in Nilambazar Police Station around 2:15 pm," STF Deputy Inspector General Parthasarathi Mahanta told PTI. Upon thorough search of the vehicle, bearing a registration number of Mizoram, the security team recovered 5.1 kg of heroin, 64,000 yaba tablets and four packets of foreign cigarettes, he said. One of the apprehended person is from Karimganj, while the other three are from Mizoram's Thenzawl, Mahanta said. "This is probably the biggest seizure of drugs in eastern India in terms of market value… which is at least Rs 100 crore," he added.
