Direct Tax Collections Surge to Rs 17 Lakh Crore, Exceeding 80% of 2023-24 Budget Estimates
The DirectTax collections have recorded over Rs 17 lakh crore in the current fiscal so far, which is about 17% higher than the gross collections for the same period last year. Finance Ministry says, this collection is over 80% of the total Budget estimates of Direct Taxes for 2023-24. The Ministry says, the growth rate for Corporate Income Tax is 8.32% and Personal Income Tax is over 26%. The refunds amounting to Rs 2,48,000 crore have been issued during the current fiscal so far.

ED Raids Karnataka MLA KY Nanje Gowda’s Properties in Rs.150 Crore Land Scam
ED has conducted search operations in the case of KY Nanje Gowda, MLA, Malur, Karnataka and his associates under the provisions of PMLA, 2002. Search actions were conducted in connection with a case related to illegal allotment of Government Land worth Rs.150 Crore. During the search operations, till now more than Rs.25 lakhs cash, documents related to movable and immovable properties worth more than Rs.50 Crore, various incriminating documents and digital data has been recovered and seized.
CBI Seeks Ethics Committee Report on Mahua Moitra Case, Awaits Lok Sabha Secretariat’s Response
CBI in a letter to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, solicited a copy of the ethics committee report in a case involving expelled Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra. The probe agency is already conducting an inquiry into the case following the directives of the Lokpal, India's anti-corruption ombudsman. The Lok Sabha Secretariat is yet to give the ethics committee report to the CBI. Further, if the Lok Sabha Secretariat forwards the report to the CBI, securing the necessary sanction under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, the agency could register an FIR directly without an approval from the Lokpal.
NIA Raids Uncover Terror Network: Seizes Weapons, Cash, and Documents from Banned Outfit
In its raid conducted at 32 locations in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Chandigarh today, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) seized two pistols, two magazines and ammunition, along with cash amounting to Rs 4.60 lakhs, besides documents and digital devices. The three cases in which the NIA action took place today relate to the terror activities being carried out by the Babbar Khalsa International, a banned terrorist organisation, and the terrorist-gangster networks operating in the country. Such activities include smuggling and induction of terrorist hardware, such as arms & ammunition, explosives and IEDs across the borders.

Calcutta High Court Stays FIR Against ED Officials, Orders Affidavit by 18th Jan; Next Hearing on 22nd Jan
Calcutta High Court passes a stay order on the FIR that had been registered by Kolkata Police. Court asks the respondent to file an affidavit of the case diary by next Thursday, 18th January and any reply by the ED if needed after that. Next hearing scheduled for 22nd January. FIR was registered by Basirhat Police against ED officials under sections of molestation, theft and manhandling. FIR mentions that Rs.1,35,000 was stolen from the premises of TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh.
