A fire broke out in a factory manufacturing Ayurvedic powder in Thane in Maharashtra in the early hours of Sunday, a civic official said. The fire at the unit in Pokhran Road Number 1 area, which started at 4:10am, caused significant damage to the machinery and stock, though no one was hurt, said Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Thane Municipal Corporation's regional disaster management cell. "The blaze was put out at 5:40am. The cause of the fire is being probed," he added.

Two Indian star tortoises rescued from train in Palghar
Two Indian star tortoises allegedly smuggled in a cardboard box were found on a local train in Maharashtra's Palghar district, a forest official said on Sunday. A passenger found an abandoned cardboard box placed on a seat of a Palghar-bound train from Dahanu Road on Friday and discovered the tortoises inside, the official said. The passenger called the helpline of the Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW), and a team was assigned to rescue the tortoises, said Pawan Sharma, founder and president of RAWW and Honorary Wildlife Warden with the forest department.
Fog: One Dead, 4 Hospitalised In Multi-Truck Pile Up On EPE
One person died and four were hospitalised with injuries after a multi-truck pile-up due to fog on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway in Greater Noida, police said on Sunday. The incident took place on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday when the vehicles were on the EPE in the Dankaur police station area, they said. "Due to excessive fog in the night, a truck rammed into the divider of the expressway while moving on the carriageway from Palwal to Noida. Subsequently, five more trucks coming from behind it piled up," a police spokesperson said. A truck driver died in the episode. His identity could not be ascertained, the police spokesperson said.

India logs 375 new Covid cases
India recorded 375 new cases of coronavirus, while the number of active infections has declined to 3,075, the health ministry said on Sunday. Two deaths have been reported from Karnataka in a span of 24 hours, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am. The number of daily cases had dropped to double-digits till December 5, but cases began to increase after emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions.
