Supreme Court Surprised by Solicitor General’s Rejection of Minority Status for Aligarh Muslim University
Supreme Court seven-judge Constitution Bench today expressed its surprise over the statement made by the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who said he does not support the 1981 amendment by Parliament to confer minority status on Aligarh Muslim University. On the fifth day of the hearing on the batch of petitions to examine the validity of the 1968 verdict by a five-judge bench that took away the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, said, "The Allahabad High Court had struck down the 1981 amendment on various grounds and the High Court's view appeared to be correct."
Man throws acid on wife, her aunt also suffers burns
A man threw acid on his 28-year-old wife, injuring her and her aunt during a fight between the couple in this district on Wednesday, police said. The incident occurred in Dalhera village under Shahpur police station limits. Circle Officer (CO) Gajendra Pal Singh said Parul Sharma and Anuj Sharma got married in 2023 but she had moved to live with her parents following a dispute with her husband just a few months after the marriage. "Parul had returned to her in-laws' house with her maternal aunt Payal (45) on Tuesday. She had a fight with Anuj this morning after which he threw acid on Parul. Her aunt, who was sitting beside her, also suffered burns," the CO said. Parul and her aunt were taken to a nearby hospital after the incident, Singh said. A case has been registered against the accused under sections of the Indian Penal Code and he has been arrested, the official said.
Delhi Education department to review 2024-25 admission process in February 1 meeting
The Delhi Additional Directorate of Education will chair a meeting on February 1 to discuss the modalities of the admission process for the 2024-25 academic session, officials said on Wednesday. The meeting will also be attended by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's education director and all deputy directors of education. In order to make the process hassle free and facilitate the parents, the admission procedure for the upcoming academic session will be reviewed, according to a Directorate of Education circular. "A meeting under the chairpersonship of the Additional Directorate of Education will be convened at 11 am on February 1 at New Conference Hall, Directorate of Education, Old Secretariat Delhi, to discuss the modalities regarding plan admissions," the circular stated.
Zee Entertainment moves NCLT against Sony for calling off Merger
Zee Entertainment on Wednesday said it has approached the National Company Law Tribunal against Sony's decision to call off the proposed merger. Besides, it has also initiated appropriate legal action to contest Sony's claims of USD 90 million (around Rs 748.5 cr) as a termination fee, for which the Japanese firm has moved the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). In a regulatory filing, Zee Entertainment Ltd (ZEEL) said it has asked Culver Max and Bangla Entertainment PVT Ltd (BEPL) to immediately withdraw the termination and confirm that they will perform their obligations to give effect to and implement the merger scheme, sanctioned by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The company has approached the Mumbai bench of NCLT, seeking directions to implement the merger scheme, it added. Further, the company has initiated appropriate legal action to contest Culver Max and BEPL's claims in the arbitration proceedings before the SIAC, the filing said.
