PM Modi Dials Indian Hockey Team, Congratulates For Bronze Medal Triumph In Paris

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today extended heartfelt congratulations to the Indian hockey team after they secured their second consecutive bronze medal at the Olympic Games. India triumphed over Spain with a 2-1 victory in the third-place playoff match.

Indian skipper Harmanpreet Singh was the hero of the match, scoring twice in quick succession (30th and 33rd minutes). Spain’s captain Marc Miralles netted their only goal in the 18th minute from a penalty stroke.

In a celebratory post on X, PM Modi praised the team’s remarkable achievement, saying, “A feat that will be cherished for generations to come. The Indian Hockey team shines bright at the Olympics, bringing home the Bronze medal. This is even more special because it is their second consecutive medal at the Olympics.”

He continued, “Their success is a triumph of skill, perseverance, and team spirit. They showed immense grit and resilience. Congratulations to the players. Every Indian has an emotional connection with hockey, and this accomplishment will make the sport even more popular among the youth of our nation.”

In a heartfelt call to the victorious team, PM Modi praised their exceptional determination and skill. He lauded their back-to-back medal achievement, underscoring the historic nature of their feat. Celebrations were further amplified by the team’s exuberant response. During the call from the Prime Minister, goalkeeper Sreejesh and his teammates were seen chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, reflecting their pride and patriotism. The chant, a powerful symbol of national pride, resonated with fans and was shared widely on social media.

The bronze medal also marks a significant moment for veteran Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who has been fondly referred to as ‘The Great Indian Wall of Indian Hockey.’ The match served as a fitting farewell for Sreejesh, who retired after an illustrious 18-year career, leaving behind a legacy as India’s best-ever goalkeeper.

Later today, Germany will face the Netherlands in the final.
