In Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri, a ‘Sarv Khap Mahapanchayat’ gathered to demand justice for Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified before the wrestling final at the Paris Olympics.
On Sunday, Khap leader Sombir Sangwan called for an investigation by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the “conspiracy” against Phogat. The wrestler, from Haryana, retired after being disqualified for being overweight ahead of her gold medal match.
After the Mahapanchayat, Sangwan urged Phogat to reconsider her retirement. He emphasized the need for an inquiry into how her weight increased suddenly, stating that those accompanying her should have ensured she remained within the weight limit.
At the Paris Games, Phogat competed in the 50 kg category but exceeded the limit by 100 grams before the final. This led to her immediate disqualification, dropping her to the last position and making her ineligible for even a bronze medal. Phogat would have been the first Indian female wrestler to win a gold or silver at the Olympics.
Phogat has appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), seeking a co-silver. The verdict is expected on August 13.
Sangwan also called for Phogat to receive the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, and suggested she should be given the same facilities as an Olympic gold medalist.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has announced that Phogat will be felicitated as a silver medalist.
