The West Bengal health department has removed Dr. Sanjay Vashisth, the medical superintendent-cum-vice principal of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, two days after the alleged Bengal doctor murder Case of a doctor at the state-run institution.
Dr. Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, the dean of student affairs, has been assigned to take over Vashisth’s responsibilities. Vashisth has been transferred to a position as a professor at the National Medical College & Hospital.
The move follows intense scrutiny from various quarters, including agitating house staff and medical students, questioning whether Vashisth could evade responsibility in the matter.

In response, the hospital has instructed the two outsourced security agencies providing staff to ensure that all scavenging workers wear designated uniforms and display their identity cards immediately. Additionally, all staff leaves, except those previously approved, have been canceled to ensure availability for potential questioning in ongoing investigations.
Sources revealed that a parallel investigation is being conducted by both a special investigation team from the city police and an internal committee. The cancellation of leaves is a precautionary measure in light of these investigations.
Dr. Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, who will manage Vashisth’s duties temporarily, is also a member of the internal probe committee.
The hospital authorities have suspended two security personnel who were on duty on the night of the incident.
A man has been arrested for the rape and murder of a female doctor who was also pursuing a postgraduate degree at the medical college. She was found dead in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital on Friday. The incident has sparked widespread protests among junior doctors and medical professionals across the state.
