Dr Karan Rajan, a UK-based NHS surgeon and popular health educator, has described colostrum, the first form of milk produced after childbirth, as ‘liquid gold’, highlighting its unmatched nutritional and protective benefits for newborns.
In his recent Instagram post, Dr Rajan described the unique qualities of this golden-coloured milk. He explained why many people consider it more potent than any supplement or medicine.
Dr Rajan explained that colostrum is the body’s first gift to a newborn. He described it as a thick, golden fluid that plays a crucial role in preparing infants for life outside the womb.
“Colostrum really is liquid gold,” he said. “It’s the first milk your body produces and is packed with nutrients that protect and prepare your newborn’s body for the outside world.”
He noted that colostrum contains antibodies, growth factors, and immune-boosting proteins that strengthen a baby’s gut and immune system. According to Dr Rajan, even small amounts can have profound effects on early development and long-term health.
Frozen Colostrum: A Lifeline for Vulnerable Infants
Dr Rajan also emphasised the importance of frozen colostrum, particularly for premature or low-birth-weight babies. “Preterm or low-birth-weight infants benefit immensely; it strengthens their immature gut barrier and reduces the risk of severe infections such as necrotising enterocolitis (NEC),” he explained.
He said that frozen colostrum acts as a ‘vital antibody-rich bridge’ for mothers who are temporarily separated from their babies. This usually happens during NICU care or when breastfeeding is delayed.
According to Dr Rajan, colostrum also plays a stabilising role for babies born to diabetic mothers. “It can safely help balance low blood sugar levels without resorting to formula feeding,” he said.
He further pointed out that in high-infection or low-resource settings, colostrum provides locally tailored antibodies. These antibodies give newborns an added layer of natural protection.
Dr Rajan concluded by reminding parents not to overlook the importance of this early nourishment. He said that although this first milk might appear small in quantity, it has a massive impact on a baby’s early health. He added that it serves as nature’s very first vaccine.
