India faces a silent but serious vitamin D crisis, even though the country receives abundant sunshine year-round.
Experts warn that most Indians, especially city dwellers, get too little of the vitamin. Modern indoor lifestyles and high pollution levels reduce the body’s ability to produce vitamin D naturally.
Vitamin D is essential for calcium and phosphorus absorption. Deficiency can lead to weak bones, bone softening, frequent fractures, and muscle problems.
Children may develop rickets. Adults risk osteomalacia or osteoporosis. Beyond bones, low vitamin D impairs immunity, reduces muscle strength, and triggers fatigue, mood issues, and other health concerns.
Recent surveys reveal that nearly half of those tested have insufficient vitamin D. An even larger share shows sub-optimal levels.
Teenagers and working-age adults are the worst affected. Many remain indoors for work, school, or leisure. Pollution, especially in large cities, blocks UVB rays, preventing natural vitamin D production.
Dietary habits worsen the problem. Many follow vegetarian diets or avoid vitamin D–rich foods like oily fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy.
Sun avoidance, heavy sunscreen use, and darker skin tones further reduce vitamin synthesis. Because of these overlapping factors, the deficiency often remains hidden. People mistake fatigue, colds, or muscle aches for stress or ageing.
Only a blood test can confirm low vitamin D, but most people get tested only when symptoms become severe.
Medical experts recommend simple steps. Spending 20-30 minutes in direct sunlight several times a week helps.
Exposing arms, legs, and face during midday or morning sun boosts vitamin D production. Including vitamin D-rich foods such as egg yolks, oily fish (for non-vegetarians), or fortified milk can also help.
For those unable to get sufficient sunlight or dietary intake, doctors may prescribe vitamin D supplements. Children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with limited sun exposure are prime candidates. Supplements should follow medical guidance to prevent overdose.
Health professionals stress awareness and proactive measures. Regular screening, public education, and fortifying common foods can curb the crisis.
Without intervention, millions will continue suffering from weak bones, fragile immunity, and chronic health problems- even under India’s bright sun.
This hidden vitamin D crisis demands urgent attention to safeguard the nation’s long-term health.
