Swaraj Kaushal Passes Away At 73; PM Modi Pays Tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over the demise of Swaraj Kaushal, senior advocate, former Mizoram Governor, and husband of former Union Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Kaushal passed away at the age of 73 on Thursday after suffering a medical complication.

In a social media message, PM Modi wrote, “Pained by the passing of Shri Swaraj Kaushal Ji. He distinguished himself as a lawyer and a person who believed in using the legal profession to improve the lives of the underprivileged.”

He further recalled Kaushal’s remarkable service to the nation, adding, “He became India’s youngest Governor and left a lasting impression on the people of Mizoram during his gubernatorial tenure. His insights as a Parliamentarian were also noteworthy. My thoughts are with his daughter Bansuri and the other family members in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”

Demise at AIIMS Delhi

Kaushal arrived at the AIIMS Emergency Department at 10.45 AM in critical condition.

Doctors immediately began resuscitation, but despite their efforts, they could not revive him and declared him dead at 1.50 PM, according to AIIMS.

Leaders across the political spectrum paid homage as his family cremated him at the Lodhi Road cremation ground in the evening.

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, his daughter, posted an emotional tribute, “Papa Swaraj Kaushal ji, your affection, your discipline, your simplicity, your patriotism, and your boundless patience are the light of my life that will never dim.”

She added that his passing was her deepest personal loss, but she believed he had now reunited with her late mother, Sushma Swaraj.

Born in Solan on 12 July 1952, Swaraj Kaushal studied law in Delhi and Chandigarh, establishing himself as a prominent criminal lawyer. He gained early recognition for defending George Fernandes in the Baroda dynamite case during the Emergency.

Swaraj Kaushal served as the Governor of Mizoram (1990–1993) and was later elected to the Rajya Sabha, representing Haryana between 1998 and 2004.

Role in Mizoram Peace Accord

People widely remember Kaushal for playing an influential role in negotiating the 1986 Mizoram Peace Accord, which ended two decades of insurgency. He later became the first Advocate General of Mizoram in 1987.

His long association with the Northeast strengthened his reputation as an expert on regional issues and conflict resolution.

Kaushal married Sushma Swaraj in 1975, and their daughter Bansuri is currently the BJP MP from New Delhi. His work as a lawyer, administrator, and parliamentarian continues to be remembered for its integrity and impact.
