Gastroenterologist Shares Simple Travel Hack To Beat Constipation On Holiday

Constipation during travel is more common than one might think. Many people experience digestive disruptions when they leave their usual routine behind.

According to Dr Joseph Salhab, a US-based gastroenterologist, this issue can be managed effectively using a few simple, practical tools.

In a recent Instagram video posted on July 20, Dr Salhab addressed the problem head-on, sharing that he, too, suffers from travel-induced constipation. He explained that changes in routine, diet, hydration, and stress levels often contribute to irregular bowel movements while on the move.

To combat this, he introduced his ‘travel poop pack’, a curated set of six essential items designed to keep digestion smooth and regular even during holidays.

What’s in the Travel Poop Pack?

1. Psyllium Fibre (Capsules or Packets)
Dr Salhab starts with psyllium fibre, which helps bulk up and soften stool. He recommends packing capsules or sachets for easy use while travelling.

2. Chia Seeds and Electrolyte Packet
Combining fibre with hydration, chia seeds and an electrolyte drink offer a double benefit. The seeds add soluble fibre while the electrolytes help keep the digestive system well-hydrated.

3. Kiwis, Apples, and Dragon Fruit
“These fruits are nature’s laxatives,” said Dr Salhab. He suggests including them in your travel diet, as they are rich in fibre and promote healthy bowel movements.

4. Magnesium Citrate (Capsules or Chewables)
Magnesium citrate acts as a gentle overnight remedy for constipation. Additionally, it can support better sleep, a bonus during jet-lagged travel.

5. Coffee, Green Tea, or Senna Tea
These beverages stimulate the colon and promote bowel movements. While coffee is a well-known stimulant, green and senna teas provide natural alternatives with similar effects.

6. Travel Foot Stool
Lastly, Dr Salhab recommends carrying a small travel foot stool. This can help maintain proper posture while using the toilet, making it easier to pass stool without straining.

Tips That Work

Dr Salhab captioned his video with a reminder: “If you can’t poop on vacation, then save this travel hack poop pack!” He added that he packs most of these items during every trip and rarely faces digestive issues as a result.

Travellers often underestimate the impact of disrupted routines on their digestive systems.

However, simple steps, such as adding fibre-rich foods, staying hydrated, and including natural supplements, can prevent discomfort.

Ultimately, this travel hack offers a proactive approach to a very real problem. By planning ahead and keeping a few compact items on hand, holiday-goers can enjoy their trips without worrying about digestive troubles.

As Dr Salhab’s advice shows, maintaining gut health doesn’t require complicated changes; just a little preparation and a handful of natural remedies can go a long way.
