Can Yeast Extract Really Fix Vitamin B12 Deficiency? Experts Explain

Yeast extract has gained popularity as a potential source of vitamin B12, particularly among vegetarians and vegans.

Health experts caution that it should not be viewed as a standalone treatment for vitamin B12 deficiency.

According to Amreen Sheikh, Chief Dietitian at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, yeast extract can contribute to daily vitamin B12 intake, but its effectiveness depends largely on the product.

Some varieties contain added vitamin B12, while others include inactive B12-like compounds that the body cannot utilise efficiently.

Amreen Sheikh explained that yeast extract may benefit individuals with marginal deficiency or those seeking to maintain adequate vitamin B12 levels through diet.

It also provides protein and several B vitamins when incorporated into meals such as soups, spreads and seasonings.

Consumers should ensure that the product contains clearly labelled, bioavailable vitamin B12.

Amreen Sheikh emphasised that people with clinically diagnosed vitamin B12 deficiency should not rely solely on yeast extract.

Individuals experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, numbness, memory problems or anaemia generally require oral supplements or injections to restore vitamin levels effectively and safely.

Yeast extract may support treatment but cannot replace medical intervention.

The expert also highlighted absorption concerns.

Vitamin B12 absorption depends on gut health and a protein known as intrinsic factor.

Older adults, individuals with digestive disorders and those taking long-term acid-suppressing medicines may struggle to absorb sufficient B12 from food sources, including yeast extract.

Consumers should carefully read product labels and check for forms such as cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin. They should also monitor sodium levels, as many yeast extract products contain high amounts of salt.

Experts advise anyone concerned about a deficiency to undergo proper testing and follow professional medical guidance.
