Men’s mental health remains a significantly overlooked issue amidst growing societal discussions on anxiety, depression, and stress.
According to experts, approximately 40 percent of men in India refrain from discussing their mental health due to fears of stigma.
During International Men’s Health Week observed annually from 10 to 16 June, efforts are intensified to raise awareness about men’s health concerns.
As per IANS, Dr. Samir Kumar Praharaj, Head of Psychiatry at Kasturba Medical College, MAHE, Manipal, emphasizes that Indian men’s hesitance to discuss mental health stems from societal stigmas and the misconception that men should manage their emotions alone.
As per IANS, Dr. Shyam Bhat, Psychiatrist and Chairperson of LiveLoveLaugh, emphasized the societal norms that impose expectations of strength and emotional resilience on men.
He explained, “Men often conceal their emotional struggles due to societal pressures, resorting to behaviors such as aggression or substance abuse rather than seeking help.”
The experts noted that these tendencies contribute to a higher incidence of suicide among men compared to women, with suicide rates being 2.5 times higher in men.
To address these challenges, they called for comprehensive awareness campaigns and educational initiatives aimed at dispelling myths and reducing stigma surrounding mental health issues.
They also stressed the importance of adopting healthy habits and seeking professional help when needed.
Dr. Samir emphasized the significance of promoting positive masculine identities and encouraging men to prioritize their mental well-being through activities like exercise and mindfulness.
Meanwhile, the experts emphasized the need for societal change in perceptions of masculinity and encouraged men to prioritize their mental health and seek support without hesitation.
