The Supreme Court will hear a petition on Thrusday challenging the election of Gautam Buddha Nagar BJP MP Dr Mahesh Sharma. Geeta Rani Sharma, a resident of Bulandshahr, filed the petition after the Allahabad High Court rejected it.
In her petition, Geeta Rani accused the presiding officer of wrongfully canceling her nomination. She contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate.
The Allahabad High Court initially heard the petition and removed the Election Commissioner from the list of parties. The court also ordered the removal of DM Gautam Buddha Nagar and two other respondents from the case. The High Court stated that it would proceed with a hearing if opposing MPs failed to file counter affidavits.
Geeta Rani alleged that the Central Election Commissioner’s objections influenced the case. Dissatisfied with the High Court’s decision, she moved to the Supreme Court.
Geeta Rani Sharma, a former police officer, entered politics after resigning from government service. She pursued an LLB and contested elections as an independent candidate. She previously contested the 2022 assembly elections, raising allegations against the Congress party during that period.
Dr. Mahesh Sharma, the BJP MP from Gautam Buddha Nagar, has secured three consecutive Lok Sabha victories. In 2024, he defeated SP’s Mahendra Singh Nagar with a significant margin. Dr. Sharma also won the elections in 2014 and 2019, marking a political hat-trick.
