India Reaches 214 GW Green Energy Milestone, Accelerates Toward 500 GW Goal By 2030

India ended 2024 with an impressive 214 GW of installed green energy capacity, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The country is firmly on track to achieve its 500 GW non-fossil fuel energy target by 2030.

From April to November 2024, India added nearly 15 GW of renewable energy capacity, almost doubling the 7.57 GW added during the same period in 2023. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, praised these milestones, calling India a global leader in sustainable energy development.

Solar Energy Capacity Surges

India’s solar energy capacity climbed to 94.17 GW in 2024. By November, the combined installed and pipeline solar projects reached 261.15 GW, reflecting robust growth. Moreover, the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’ achieved 7 lakh rooftop solar installations within 10 months of its February 2024 launch. This initiative offers up to 300 units of free electricity monthly and subsidies ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹78,000 per household.

Under the PM KUSUM scheme, farmers benefited as the government installed over 2.95 lakh standalone off-grid solar pumps. Additionally, 35 lakh grid-connected agricultural pumps were solarized. Between January and November 2024, solar energy capacity grew by 11.34 GW, reinforcing India’s commitment to clean energy.

Wind Energy Gains And Green Hydrogen Mission

India’s wind energy capacity reached 47.96 GW by November 2024. Total installed and pipeline projects grew to 74.44 GW, with Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu leading the way.

At the same time, the government pushed forward with the National Green Hydrogen Mission. With a budget of ₹19,744 crore, the mission aims to make India a global hub for green hydrogen production and export.

India’s renewable energy achievements not only demonstrate progress but also reinforce its resolve to achieve the ambitious 500 GW target by 2030, paving the way for a sustainable future.
