The Supreme Court will convene on Monday to address Delhi’s escalating air pollution crisis, following concerns raised by Amicus Curiae Aparajita Singh. Singh emphasized the gravity of the situation, asserting that Delhi’s government has yet to implement precautionary measures, despite deteriorating air quality across the city.
Amicus Curiae Warns of Escalating Health Crisis
In her address to the court, Aparajita Singh expressed alarm over the city’s worsening air quality, stating, “We are in a serious situation today.” Singh criticized the lack of proactive measures, stressing that authorities should act swiftly rather than waiting for Delhi to become the most polluted city globally.

She added that the Supreme Court previously allowed retrospective actions to manage air quality, questioning why authorities delay critical interventions until pollution reaches extreme levels.
Central Pollution Monitoring Agency Data Shows Severe AQI Readings
Delhi’s air quality has remained in the “severe” category for a second consecutive day, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) hitting hazardous levels. On Thursday, Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 473, while neighborhoods like Aya Nagar, Ashok Vihar, and Wazirpur exceeded 400, all placing air quality in the severe range. Persistent smog has shrouded the National Capital Region (NCR), leading to poor visibility and increased health risks.
Court-Directed Review with CAQM Response Expected
In light of these alarming figures, Singh has called on the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to present a response and clarify the lack of action. The Supreme Court is expected to question CAQM on its measures for managing air pollution and explore solutions to mitigate the severe AQI levels currently impacting residents.
With Delhi’s air quality showing no signs of improvement, the Supreme Court’s intervention on Monday may prove pivotal in determining urgent actions to address the health crisis facing the national capital.
