On Tuesday, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to self-proclaimed godman Asaram Bapu on medical grounds until the end of March in the 2013 rape case.
A bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal issued specific conditions for Asaram’s release.
The court ordered that he must not tamper with evidence or meet his followers while on bail.
Furthermore, three police officers will accompany him to ensure his safety and that his treatment proceeds without disruption.
The court noted that Asaram, who is currently serving a life sentence in Jodhpur Central Jail, suffers from age-related health issues, including a history of two heart attacks.
The order stated, “We are inclined to grant bail to the petitioner on medical grounds by the end of March. The petitioner shall not make any attempt to tamper with the evidence, shall not meet his followers.”
In his appeal to the Supreme Court, Asaram requested bail due to his deteriorating health and the need for advanced medical treatment.
He also sought suspension of his life imprisonment sentence, which had imposed by a Gujarat trial court in 2023 after his conviction for raping a female disciple at his Surat Ashram in 2013.
The Gujarat High Court had previously rejected his plea to suspend the sentence in August 2023. Following this, Asaram approached the Supreme Court for relief.
