India Launches First Organic Fisheries Cluster In Sikkim

On Monday, January 6, 2024, Union Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh inaugurated India’s first organic fisheries cluster in Soreng District, Sikkim. This landmark project is expected to enhance farmer incomes and promote sustainable aquaculture practices, with an emphasis on antibiotic, chemical, and pesticide-free organic fish.

The organic fisheries cluster aims to cater to eco-conscious markets globally by offering fish free from harmful chemicals and antibiotics. The Fisheries Ministry highlighted that this initiative aligns with Sikkim’s reputation for sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices, which the state has already embraced through organic agriculture.

“The Government of Sikkim has already embraced organic farming, helping to build a strong reputation for sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural practices. Introducing organic fisheries and aquaculture will support the state’s broader vision of promoting organic, sustainable, and environmentally friendly practices across all sectors,” the Ministry explained.

A Vision For Cleaner Aquaculture

The organic fisheries cluster promotes ecologically sound fish farming systems, avoiding the use of chemicals, antibiotics, and pesticides. This approach ensures minimal environmental pollution while preventing damage to aquatic ecosystems. According to the Ministry, these practices will contribute significantly to sustainable fish production in India.

In a related development, Minister Singh also inaugurated and laid the foundations for 50 key projects under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), with a total investment of ₹50 crore. These projects will cover all northeastern states except Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram and are expected to boost the region’s aquaculture industry.

The launch of the organic fisheries cluster and the various PMMSY initiatives signal the government’s commitment to fostering a sustainable, environmentally conscious aquaculture sector in India. With a focus on organic and eco-friendly practices, these projects aim to transform both the livelihoods of farmers and the aquaculture landscape across the country.
