Supreme Court Briefed On Closure Report In Chhattisgarh Case Against Baba Ramdev

The Supreme Court was informed that a closure report has been submitted in the Chhattisgarh case filed against yoga guru and Patanjali Ayurved founder Baba Ramdev.

The update came during the hearing of a petition filed by Ramdev, where the court, led by Justices MM Sundresh and SC Sharma, heard submissions regarding multiple FIRs lodged over his controversial comments on COVID-19 treatment.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the bench that the Chhattisgarh police had filed a closure report, effectively ending proceedings in that particular case.

Senior advocate Siddharth Dave, representing Ramdev, argued that Ramdev’s statements questioning the effectiveness of allopathic medicines like Remdesivir and Fabiflu, and suggesting their link to patient deaths, prompted the FIRs.

His remarks had gone viral during the peak of the pandemic and ignited widespread backlash, particularly from medical associations.

Local branches of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) registered two FIRs against him, one in Patna and another in Raipur, alleging that Ramdev’s remarks could mislead the public and undermine trust in proper medical treatment.

Plea to Transfer All FIRs to Delhi

Ramdev has petitioned the court to club all FIRs and transfer the cases to Delhi, citing his status as a public figure and the difficulty of facing multiple proceedings in different states.

His legal team maintains that Ramdev did not make derogatory statements about doctors and that people took his comments out of context.

In earlier hearings, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi stated that after Ramdev launched Ayurvedic medicines, people targeted him and that Ramdev made his statements in a moment of enthusiasm.

Despite Ramdev offering multiple apologies, the Supreme Court remains firm.

The bench recently gave him and Acharya Balkrishna one week to make amends but clarified that it had not yet granted forgiveness.

The justices emphasised that promoting one system of medicine should not involve discrediting another. Justice Hima Kohli remarked that advertising cures for incurable diseases is irresponsible, regardless of the medical discipline.
