CJI Gavai Meets Bhutan King And PM To Strengthen Judicial Cooperation

On Saturday, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai met Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck during his official visit to the Himalayan nation. Their discussion centred on strengthening cooperation between the two countries’ judicial systems and reaffirming the close bond shared by India and Bhutan.

Earlier, on Friday, Justice Gavai also held talks with Bhutan’s Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, where he assured India’s continued support in enhancing Bhutan’s judiciary through technology adoption, skill development, and exchange programmes.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Tobgay shared on social media, “I had the pleasure of meeting H.E. Mr. Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, to discuss closer judicial collaboration and the role of technology and AI in our justice system, while also expressing gratitude for India’s support in Bhutan’s development.”

Justice Gavai also addressed students and faculty at the JSW School of Law, an event attended by Princess Sonam Dechen Wangchuck and Chief Justice of Bhutan Norbu Tshering.

Speaking to the audience, the Indian Chief Justice stressed that empathy, integrity, and ethical conduct must guide those entering the legal profession.

Furthering educational and professional exchange, Justice Gavai announced that the Supreme Court of India will reserve two annual Law Clerk positions for graduates from Bhutan, part of an initiative to encourage academic collaboration and judicial learning between the two nations.

Meeting with Bhutan Supreme Court Judges

Earlier on Thursday, the CJI, along with Lyonpo Norbu Tshering, met other judges of the Supreme Court of Bhutan in Thimphu.

According to the Indian Embassy in Thimphu, “The two Chief Justices held discussions on strengthening India-Bhutan judicial cooperation and exchanges. The Hon’ble CJI also planted a tree in the premises of the Supreme Court of Bhutan.”

As part of his engagements, the CJI delivered a lecture at the Royal Institute of Management under the 5th Wisdom for Future Talk Series hosted by the JSW Law Research Centre.

His talk on ‘Courts and Constitutional Governance’ focused on judicial accountability and the evolving role of courts in democratic societies.
