Prayagraj Tribunal Lacks Courtroom For 3.5 Years; Litigants Left In Limbo

For over three and a half years, litigants have suffered due to the lack of a courtroom and building for the UP Recovery of Damages to Public and Private Property Claims Tribunal in Prayagraj.

The tribunal covers five commissioneries—Prayagraj, Varanasi, Vindhyachal, Chitrakoot, and Jhansi. Yet, it still has no proper space to conduct legal proceedings.

The government has failed to provide basic infrastructure. This failure has denied justice to people seeking compensation for damage to public and private property.

The current Chairman of the Prayagraj Tribunal also handles responsibilities at the Lucknow Tribunal. This dual role has further delayed case hearings.

Siddharth Narayan filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Allahabad High Court. He pointed out how poor administration has blocked access to timely justice.

The PIL argues that claimants have no functional forum to present their cases.

The Allahabad High Court took the issue seriously. It directed the state to respond.

The court sought instructions from the Additional Chief Secretary (Home/Police), Commissioner of Prayagraj, and the District Magistrate of Prayagraj.

The court also stressed the urgent need for a courtroom and proper facilities. It asked the authorities to act fast. Justice, the court said, must not be delayed any further.

The court’s action has raised hope among claimants. Many now expect a quick resolution and restoration of their right to be heard.
