Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh of the Allahabad High Court pronounced the order on Monday, 8 July.
The court delivered the ruling, reserved on 25 May, providing significant relief to Keshav Prasad Maurya, who faced allegations of misrepresentation and forgery related to his educational qualifications.
Social activist Diwakar Nath Tripathi had filed the revision petition, alleging that Maurya used an invalid academic degree to file his nomination papers and also to secure a petrol pump licence.
Tripathi demanded that the police lodge a First Information Report (FIR) and launch a criminal investigation.
Court history & the Supreme Court’s intervention
When the police failed to register an FIR, Tripathi initially moved the district court, which dismissed his petition.
He then approached the Allahabad High Court, which also rejected the case.
Unsatisfied with the outcome, Tripathi moved the Supreme Court, which directed the High Court to re-examine the matter.
Acting on the apex court’s instructions, the High Court heard the case afresh and has now dismissed it, effectively closing the legal chapter against Maurya for the time being.
Major political relief
Observers view the court’s decision as a major legal and political relief for Keshav Prasad Maurya, who holds a key position in the Uttar Pradesh government.
The allegations, if admitted, could have led to serious consequences, including disqualification and criminal prosecution.
With the court ruling in his favour, Maurya is expected to continue his political activities without immediate legal hurdles.
However, the case has once again brought to light the issue of transparency and scrutiny in election affidavits, a matter of ongoing concern in Indian politics.
