Speaking at the Jharkhand High Court’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, Supreme Court Judge and incoming Chief Justice of India, Justice Suryakant, likened high courts to emergency wards in modern hospitals, stressing the need for rapid, precise, and effective justice delivery.
The event was attended by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, chief justices from various high courts, senior state officials, and numerous judicial officers.
Justice Suryakant described India’s Constitution as a vibrant social contract, assigning the judiciary the vital task of upholding justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
Reflecting on his first hearing, he recalled a custody case involving two minors, noting that “justice is not merely about resolving disputes but safeguarding innocent lives amid challenging circumstances.”
He highlighted the significance of Article 226, stating that high courts safeguard not only fundamental rights but all legal rights, serving as the backbone of the judiciary and bringing the Constitution to life for citizens.
Jharkhand High Court’s Pioneering Role
Justice Suryakant praised the Jharkhand High Court for landmark rulings protecting tribal rights, worker dignity, environmental conservation, and equitable use of mineral resources.
He further commended technological advancements, including e-filing, real-time case tracking, digital databases, and portals for the visually impaired, which have made justice more accessible.
He also acknowledged the proactive role of judges collaborating with the State Legal Services Authority to enhance legal literacy and provide on-ground legal aid.
Highlighting emerging challenges, Justice Suryakant noted the judiciary’s need for new skills and advanced infrastructure to tackle cybercrime, environmental crises, and complex socio-economic disputes.
He concluded by honouring the contributions of current and former chief justices, judges, and officials, remarking that “the 25-year journey of the Jharkhand High Court is a resonant anthem of justice, inspiring future generations.”
