ED Summons Partha Chatterjee, Arpita Mukherjee In Bengal SSC Recruitment Case

Enforcement Directorate has summoned former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and his close aide Arpita Mukherjee in connection with the School Service Commission (SSC) teachers’ recruitment corruption case, sources in the central agency said on Monday.

According to information available, both will be called in for questioning after the state Assembly elections. Their statements are expected to be recorded, though it remains unclear whether they will be summoned together or separately.

Chatterjee was arrested in July 2022 in connection with the West Bengal SSC recruitment corruption case. Mukherjee was also arrested in the same investigation. However, both later secured bail and are currently out of jail.

Apart from the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Enforcement Directorate is probing the alleged irregularities in the recruitment process. Investigators have reportedly found references to both Chatterjee and Mukherjee at multiple points during the course of the probe, prompting the fresh summons.

Cash Seizure And Legal Developments

At the time of Chatterjee’s arrest in 2022, the ED recovered Rs 20 crore in cash from Mukherjee’s residence. She was granted bail in 2024.

In September last year, the Calcutta High Court granted bail to Chatterjee. However, his release was delayed due to a Supreme Court directive stating that he could be freed only after the trial court completed the examination of material witnesses within two months. He was eventually released from judicial custody on November 11, 2025.

Following his arrest in 2022, the All India Trinamool Congress removed Chatterjee from all ministerial and organisational posts and suspended his party membership indefinitely. The party also abolished the post of Secretary General, which had been held by him.
