The Delhi High Court has extended the interim bail of Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the expelled BJP MLA and accused in the Unnao rape case, until January 15. The decision followed the submission of a medical report from AIIMS regarding Sengar’s health. The court had earlier directed AIIMS to submit the report a day prior to the ruling.
Initially, the High Court had granted Sengar interim bail until December 20, ordering that he be admitted to AIIMS in New Delhi for medical evaluation. The court also directed the Medical Superintendent to assess whether the necessary treatment could be provided at AIIMS.
Kuldeep Singh Sengar has filed a petition in the High Court, citing multiple health concerns, including diabetes, cataracts, and retina-related problems. His legal team request that his sentence suspend on health grounds. In response to his petition, the Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the CBI, seeking their reply on the request to suspend Sengar’s sentence in the case related to the custodial death of the Unnao rape victim’s father. The court is schedule to hear the case again on January 13.

During the proceedings, the CBI’s lawyer informed the court that Sengar’s previous request for suspension of his sentence had been denied by the High Court in June. In contrast, Sengar’s lawyer argued that the current petition is based solely on his client’s health issues. Sengar’s legal team also pointed out that they had not previously made such a request on health grounds and that Sengar had been in jail for nearly eight years—close to the maximum punishment of 10 years for the charges against him.
Sengar is serving a sentence for the 2017 kidnapping and rape of a minor, the Unnao rape victim. In addition to this, on March 13, 2020, a lower court sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10 lakh for his involvement in the custodial death of the victim’s father. The court emphasize that no leniency show in the case, as the victim’s father was the sole breadwinner of his family.
Sengar’s legal battle continues as his health concerns and requests for sentence suspension remain under review by the court.
