Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hosted India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medal winners at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg and said their success would inspire a new generation of athletes.
PM Modi interacted with the athletes and heard about their experiences at the Glasgow Games, where India finished fourth in the medal table with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze.
India competed in a significantly reduced programme that excluded medal-rich sports such as wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey and shooting.
India’s boxing contingent delivered one of its finest performances, returning with seven gold and three silver medals.
The gold medallists were Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal.
Jadumani Singh, Lovlina Borgohain and Narender Berwal won silver medals.
The seven gold medals also marked India’s best-ever performance by women boxers at the Commonwealth Games.
India recorded its best-ever Commonwealth Games performance in judo, winning four medals from 12 events, comprising two gold, one silver and one bronze. This surpassed the three medals won in 2022, when India did not secure any gold.
Khelo India athletes Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh won India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medals in judo.
Asmita became the first Indian woman judoka and Harsh the first Indian man to win Commonwealth Games gold.
Athletics contributed 10 medals, including five silver and five bronze.
Gulveer Singh became the first Indian track and field athlete to win two individual medals at a single Commonwealth Games, securing silver in the men’s 10,000m and bronze in the 5,000m.
Despite the restricted programme, India finished fourth with 39 medals on the strength of its performances in boxing, judo, athletics and para-athletics.
