Prime Minister Narendra Modi met India’s successful Commonwealth Games 2026 contingent and praised the athletes for delivering memorable performances on the international stage.
Speaking to the medallists, PM Modi said their contribution could not be measured solely by the number of medals India added to its tally. He explained that their performances were also encouraging young Indians to consider sport as a serious pursuit.
The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the athletes would continue to achieve success and urged them to maintain their commitment to excellence.
PM Modi highlighted the achievements of India’s para-athletes and recognised their determination in overcoming challenges to compete at the highest level. He also shared an emotional moment with gold medallist Mirabai Chanu, who spoke about the difficulties she had encountered during her journey and the emotions of seeing the Indian flag raised on the podium.
PM Modi praised her emotional response and said it reflected the immense effort and sacrifice behind a gold-medal performance.
India’s Medal Tally
India ended the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in fourth place after securing 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze.
Indian boxers delivered an exceptional campaign by winning seven gold medals and three silver medals.
Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal claimed gold in their respective categories.
Jadumani Singh, Lovlina Borgohain and Narender Berwal secured silver medals.
India’s seven boxing golds also marked the country’s strongest-ever showing by women boxers at the Commonwealth Games.
India achieved its finest Commonwealth Games result in judo after collecting four medals, including two golds, one silver and one bronze.
Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh made history by becoming the first Indian female and male judokas to win Commonwealth Games gold.
Athletes contributed another 10 medals, with five silver and five bronze.
Gulveer Singh also created a landmark by becoming the first Indian track-and-field athlete to secure two individual medals at one edition of the Games.
PM Modi highlighted programmes such as Khelo India for helping identify and develop young sporting talent across the country. He said the success of Indian athletes could influence children more powerfully than traditional awareness campaigns and encourage more youngsters to pursue sport.
Despite competing in a limited programme, India’s 39-medal performance demonstrated the country’s expanding sporting capabilities.
