The Uttar Pradesh government has intensified its crackdown on misinformation about the Mahakumbh, with the police registering cases against seven social media accounts for spreading fake news. On the directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Director General of Police Prashant Kumar has identified and initiated action against individuals responsible for circulating false information.
Misleading Video Exposed
During routine social media monitoring, officials discovered that a 2021 video from Ghazipur, showing bodies on a riverbank, was falsely linked to an alleged stampede at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj. The misleading posts aimed to tarnish the image of the state government and law enforcement while inciting social unrest.
The Uttar Pradesh Police swiftly debunked the misinformation, confirming that the viral footage had no connection to the Mahakumbh. The official Kumbh Mela Police account also issued a clarification to counter the misleading claims.
Legal Action Against Seven Accounts
A case has been registered at the Kotwali Kumbh Mela police station in Prayagraj against the following seven social media accounts for spreading falsehoods:

Strict Action Against Misinformation
The administration has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy toward false propaganda related to Mahakumbh. Authorities continue to track and take legal action against those responsible for misleading posts.
The police have urged citizens to refrain from believing or sharing unverified content and to report any suspicious social media activity to ensure the peaceful and successful conduct of the Mahakumbh.
