In a bid to make the upcoming Maha Kumbh 2025 both eco-friendly and sustainable, the Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has launched a comprehensive initiative to eliminate plastic waste from the event.
As part of the green initiative, authorities will ban all single-use plastics during the Maha Kumbh and replace them with eco-friendly alternatives like jute and cloth bags, leaf plates, clay cups (kulhars), and other natural products.
The Prayagraj Mela Authority has already issued tenders to set up dedicated stalls offering sustainable products like kulhars, dona (leaf plates), pattal (leaf bowls), and jute bags throughout the fairgrounds, making it easier for devotees and visitors to adopt environmentally friendly practices.
These eco-friendly options will be available at multiple points within the Mela area, ensuring accessibility for everyone attending the grand religious gathering.
In addition to promoting these green alternatives, the Yogi government has taken steps to ensure that shopkeepers and vendors also comply with the plastic-free directive.
Authorities will require all vendors at the Maha Kumbh to use only natural products, aligning with the state’s vision for a cleaner, more sustainable event.
Prayagraj Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant has taken on the responsibility of overseeing the implementation of this initiative.
The city has divided into various zones, with each zone assigning a nodal officer to monitor the ban on plastics and maintain cleanliness.
These officers will submit weekly progress reports to ensure the successful execution of the plastic-free mandate.
Furthermore, polythene wholesalers in Prayagraj have been instructed to halt the supply of plastic bags, further reinforcing the push to eliminate plastic waste from the city.
To raise awareness among the public, a robust awareness campaign is underway.
Posters, banners, and street performances will take place throughout Prayagraj as part of the ‘Swachh Maha Kumbh, Swachh Prayagraj’ initiative.
These efforts aim to educate both locals and visitors about the environmental impact of plastic and encourage them to adopt sustainable alternatives.
As part of the ongoing campaign, the Divisional Commissioner and the District Magistrate of Prayagraj recently took the ‘Say No to Plastic’ pledge at the sacred banks of the Sangam, urging citizens to join hands in ensuring a plastic-free Maha Kumbh.
This ambitious effort to create a plastic-free Maha Kumbh is a part of the Uttar Pradesh government’s broader commitment to sustainability, with an emphasis on preserving the environment while hosting one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
