The well-documented rivalry between former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, popularly referred to as the ‘Raja’ and ‘Maharaja’ of state politics, has often been marked by sharp exchanges and public taunts.
Even after the elections, both leaders have continued to take verbal swipes at one another.
However, at a recent event in Bhopal, Scindia’s gracious behaviour not only surprised many but also earned the admiration of his long-time political opponent.
A private programme in Ratibad, Bhopal, hosted Scindia as the chief guest. Taking his place on the stage, the minister soon noticed Rajya Sabha MP and former CM Digvijaya Singh seated in the audience alongside his wife.
In a display of humility, Scindia stepped down from the stage and walked directly to Singh. With folded hands, he offered an apology, saying, “I’m sorry, I didn’t see you earlier.”
He then took Singh by the hand and guided him onto the stage.
The audience responded with warm applause, recognising the rare moment of public respect between two political rivals.
The gesture quickly gained attention beyond the event. Kalki Peethadheeshwar Acharya Pramod Krishnam shared a video of the incident on social media, using it to make a pointed remark about the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi.
In his post, Krishnam wrote, “If only these values were in @RahulGandhi, then they wouldn’t have called senior leaders “lame” horses, they should have learned something from @JM_Scindia.”
The reference targeted past controversies where Gandhi allegedly made dismissive comments about veteran Congress leaders.
Observers note that while political disagreements are common, such public displays of courtesy are rare in contemporary politics.
Observers view Scindia’s action as a reminder that respect for opponents can coexist with ideological differences.
The incident has also reignited debates about leadership styles within Indian politics, with some commentators suggesting that such gestures can positively influence political discourse and public perception.
