Kashmir has a history of soldier abductions

In the past, militants have kidnapped troops and police officers who were not on duty in Kashmir’s southern and central regions. Lashkar-e-Taiba militants kidnapped and murdered J&K Light Infantry soldier Sameer Ahmad Malla in March 2022; his body was later discovered in an orchard in Budgam. A soldier from the Territorial Army named Shakir Manzoor Wagay of Shopian’s decomposing body was discovered in the Kulgam region in September of 2021, more than a year after his kidnapping.
