Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Srinagar on Thursday, highlighting a touching story of Irshad Hussain Naikoo, a farmer from Anantnag. Naikoo shared how he overcame challenges to weave a Pheran, the traditional Kashmiri robe, for his “ideal” leader. He described the joy he felt when PM Modi wore it at an event in Srinagar.
Naikoo dreamt of meeting PM Modi since 2013. Despite financial struggles, he wanted to present something special to the Prime Minister. In a video message, he said, “I admired Narendra Modi for a long time and wanted to meet him. I started saving money to buy him a gift. Eventually, I decided to make a Pheran for him.”
Crafting the Gift and Overcoming Obstacles
Naikoo explained the difficulties he faced, including not knowing PM Modi’s measurements. He recalled, “I thought of my father, who has a similar build. I took him to the tailor and explained how I wanted the Pheran made.” After finishing the garment, Naikoo traveled to Delhi, hoping to deliver it personally.
However, he couldn’t get past security at the Prime Minister’s residence. Undeterred, he opted to send the Pheran by courier. Days later, while working in his fields, he received an unexpected call from the Prime Minister’s Office. The caller informed him that PM Modi was wearing the Pheran he had gifted.
Naikoo felt ecstatic. “It’s truly a memory I will cherish forever,” he said, reflecting on the moment he saw PM Modi wearing the Pheran online.
