The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF) has declared that their ‘cease-work’ protest will persist until the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s promises regarding the removal of key officials are formalized in a written agreement.
This decision follows a lengthy five-hour meeting held at the Chief Minister’s residence on Monday evening.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Banerjee agreed to the replacement of several high-ranking officials in response to the junior doctors’ demands.
Authorities are likely to remove Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, Deputy Commissioner (North Division) Abhishek Gupta, the state director of health services, and the director of medical education.
“We are happy that the government has yielded to our demands after 38 days of relentless protest. This is a victory not just for us but for the common people as well. However, our protest will continue until we see these changes implemented in writing. With a crucial Supreme Court hearing scheduled for today, we will make our final decision after that,” stated a WBJDF representative.
Another member of the WBJDF emphasized that the achievements so far are the result of the sustained efforts and protests over the past 38 days.
“The need to eradicate the corruption entrenched in the state’s health education system has never been more urgent,” he added.
The tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has sparked the ongoing protest among junior doctors.
The forum’s stance underscores their commitment to seeing their demands fully met before they agree to suspend their strike.
