In a major crackdown, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched extensive raid and search operations across various locations in Kolkata and Hooghly district, targeting high-profile figures and institutions connected to a financial irregularities case involving RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.
Among those under scrutiny is Dr. Sudipto Roy, a four-time Trinamool Congress MLA from the Serampore Assembly constituency in Hooghly district.
Dr. Roy, who is also a medical professional, holds significant positions, including chairman of the patients’ welfare committee at RG Kar, member of the West Bengal Medical Recruitment Board, and former president of the West Bengal Medical Council.
The ED’s operation covers six locations, including Dr. Roy’s residence in North Kolkata and a farmhouse registered under his name in Daspur.
Additionally, a third team of ED officials has targeted a businessman’s residence on Ballygunge Circular Road in South Kolkata.
Reports link this businessman to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, through connections related to the supply of medical equipment.
The raids follow recent allegations made by Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, who accused Dr. Roy of misappropriating medical equipment meant for RG Kar Medical College & Hospital to his own nursing home located near his residence.
Dr. Roy has vehemently denied these claims, challenging Adhikari to provide concrete evidence to support the allegations.
The raids however coincide with a crucial Supreme Court hearing scheduled for Tuesday regarding the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor from RG Kar.
This hearing is taking place amid ongoing discussions between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the protesting junior doctors at her residence in South Kolkata.

In response to the protests, Chief Minister Banerjee announced the impending removal of several key officials, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioner (North Division), the Director of Health Services, and the Director of Medical Education.
Despite these assurances, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF) has stated that they will only end their cease-work agitation once these changes are officially implemented.
