External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in West Asia, warning that continuing tensions and threats to critical maritime routes and energy infrastructure remain a major global concern.
Addressing the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi under India’s 2026 chairship, Jaishankar said, “The conflict in West Asia merits particular attention. Continuing tensions, risks to maritime traffic, and disruptions to energy infrastructure highlight the fragility of the situation. Safe and unimpeded maritime flows through international waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, remain vital for global economic well-being.”
The Minister also reiterated India’s commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter. He stressed that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity must remain central to international relations.
“Dialogue and diplomacy are the only sustainable means of resolving conflicts,” he said.
Jaishankar said the growing global uncertainties have weakened the multilateral system, particularly the United Nations framework. He renewed India’s call for reforms in the UN Security Council in both permanent and non-permanent categories, warning that continued delays carry high costs.
In his opening remarks, the EAM also stressed the need for stronger BRICS cooperation. He referred to ongoing geopolitical conflicts, economic instability, and trade disruptions.
The Minister further highlighted climate-related challenges affecting the global landscape.
Several foreign ministers attended the meeting. They included Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono.
Araghchi’s visit marks Tehran’s first major diplomatic outreach since the escalation of the West Asia conflict.
Iran also urged India, as the current BRICS chair, to play an independent role in ending US-Israel hostilities against Tehran.
The escalating conflict has shaken global energy markets. Oil and gas prices surged sharply after Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz. The corridor carries nearly 20 per cent of global oil and LNG supplies.
