S Jaishankar Says BRICS Expected To Play Stabilising Role In Global Uncertainty

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said there is a growing expectation among emerging markets and developing countries that BRICS will play a ‘constructive and stabilising role’ amid rising global uncertainty, conflicts and economic challenges. He made the remarks during his opening address at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held at Bharat Mandapam under India’s 2026 chairship of the expanded grouping.

Foreign Ministers and senior diplomats from BRICS member and partner nations arrived in New Delhi earlier in the day to participate in the high-level discussions.

Jaishankar welcomed the visiting leaders and dignitaries before the meeting commenced.

Addressing the gathering, Jaishankar said India’s chairship appreciated the support extended by member nations, which had contributed to the steady progress of BRICS initiatives. He noted that the meeting was taking place during a period marked by instability in international relations, ongoing conflicts, economic uncertainty and challenges linked to trade, technology and climate change.

Emphasising the significance of BRICS, the Minister said developing countries increasingly look towards the grouping for stability and constructive engagement in global affairs.

Jaishankar stressed that development concerns remain central to the BRICS agenda, particularly issues relating to energy, food, fertiliser and health security, along with access to finance. He also underlined the importance of economic resilience through reliable supply chains and diversified markets.

On climate issues, the External Affairs Minister said discussions should promote sustainable development while upholding equity and common but differentiated responsibilities.

Highlighting the importance of peace and security, the Minister said recent conflicts reinforce the need for dialogue and diplomacy, while also calling for stronger cooperation against terrorism.

As chair of the meeting, Jaishankar said India would facilitate an open and constructive exchange of views and encouraged delegations to contribute freely towards meaningful outcomes.
