Voting gathered momentum in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu on Thursday, with turnout reaching 41.11 per cent in West Bengal and 37.56 per cent in Tamil Nadu by 11:00 AM, according to the Election Commission of India.
In West Bengal, polling is underway for 152 constituencies across 16 districts in the first phase of the Assembly elections. Voting began at 7:00 AM, with steady participation reported from both northern and southern parts of the state.
Long queues were seen at several polling stations during the morning hours.
The districts voting in this phase include Cooch Behar, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, North and South Dinajpur, Malda, Murshidabad, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan, and Birbhum.
The remaining 142 constituencies in the state will go to the polls on April 29. Counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
Tamil Nadu is holding elections for all 234 Assembly constituencies in a single phase. More than 5.7 crore voters are eligible to participate, deciding the fate of 4,023 candidates.
The contest in Tamil Nadu includes major political formations such as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led bloc, Naam Tamilar Katchi, and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
Polling began early in the morning, with voters turning out in large numbers across districts.
With turnout expected to influence the outcome, political parties are closely tracking trends across constituencies.
The results for both states will be announced on May 4.
