The Bihar government has appointed Vinay Kumar as the new Director General of Police (DGP). He will serve in this position for the next two years. Kumar, a 1991 batch IPS officer, was previously the CMD of the Police Building Construction Corporation. Vinay Kumar has replaced Alok Raj, who was serving as the in-charge DGP after former DGP RS Bhatti went on central deputation. Alok Raj’s tenure lasted only three months. The state government issued a notification late Friday evening confirming Vinay Kumar’s appointment.
Background and Career of Vinay Kumar
Kumar, known for his efficient and honest service, has held key positions in Bihar’s police force. He has served as ADG Law and Order and ADG CID. Vinay Kumar is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, where he studied engineering. His leadership qualities and dedication to the force have earned him a strong reputation.
Alok Raj’s Short Tenure
Alok Raj was appointed DGP in August 2024. He brought over 35 years of experience in policing across Bihar, Jharkhand, and Bengal. Alok Raj’s first posting as an IPS officer was as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Patna City. He has been awarded the President’s Medal three times for his service.
