Vikram K Doraiswami, currently India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday.
The 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer will assume charge shortly. Doraiswami has built a long diplomatic career across key assignments.
The Government appointed him High Commissioner to the UK in August 2022 after his tenure in Bangladesh. He began his training in New Delhi in 1992 and 1993, then joined the Commission of India in Hong Kong in May 1994 as Third Secretary.
Vikram K Doraiswami also studied Chinese at the New Asia Yale-in-Asia language school of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
In September 1996, he moved to the Embassy of India in Beijing, where he served for nearly four years.
Vikram K Doraiswami later worked in the Prime Minister’s Office in 2002 and served as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of India.
In 2006, he joined India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York as Political Counsellor. He went on to serve as Consul General in Johannesburg in October 2009.
Doraiswami returned to the MEA in July 2011 and headed the SAARC Division until October 2012. He also coordinated the Fourth BRICS Summit in New Delhi in March 2012.
From October 2012 to October 2014, he served as Joint Secretary of the Americas Division. Doraiswami then became Ambassador to Uzbekistan in Tashkent and later took charge as Ambassador to South Korea in Seoul in April 2015.
Vikram K Doraiswami will replace Pradeep Kumar Rawat. Rawat joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1990. He studied Mandarin. He served in Hong Kong and Beijing from 1992 to 1997.
Rawat also returned to Beijing as Counsellor in 2003 and later served as Deputy Chief of Mission before he was appointed Ambassador to China in December 2021.
