Climate activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk welcomed Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation on Saturday, describing it as a significant moment for Indian democracy.
In a post on X, Wangchuk said the outcome reflected the power of peaceful public participation and sustained civic engagement.
Sonam Wangchuk congratulated the country’s youth, members of the Citizens’ Justice Platform (CJP) and citizens who participated in the nationwide movement. He said the campaign had demonstrated that democratic action could deliver accountability and stressed that the focus must now shift towards meaningful reforms in the education sector.
IT’S A VICTORY OF DEMOCRACY
direct democracy… straight from the streets.
It’s a victory of peace, patience & persévérance.
Congratulations CJP, Gen Z of the nation and thank you all citizens for shedding fear and the fear of fear and rising up from every corner of the nation.… pic.twitter.com/rSLOfvba2R— Sonam Wangchuk (@Wangchuk66) July 25, 2026
The activist had observed a 26-day hunger strike demanding action against alleged examination paper leaks and systemic irregularities. He ended the protest on 23 July at Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital after receiving written assurances from the NDA government in the presence of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh.
Earlier in the day, Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down as Union Education Minister, saying the developments of the previous 10 days had caused him deep distress. He said he resigned to protect students’ interests, preserve the credibility of the examination system and prevent anti-national elements from exploiting the situation.
Pradhan’s resignation also followed nationwide protests demanding accountability over alleged paper leaks and examination irregularities.
The Citizens’ Justice Platform also hailed the resignation as a triumph for democracy and shared videos of supporters celebrating the announcement on social media.
Addressing demonstrators, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said the resignation showed that determined public participation could compel those in authority to accept responsibility.
